About Me

I am an artist and teacher living in Ipswich, Suffolk.  After studying art  in Swansea, I returned to Ipswich, the town I grew up in.  My journey as an artist and a painter has helped me connect with and deepen my appreciation of the area I live in.  The local countryside, skies and rivers provide a backdrop against which I see the gradual unfolding of my abilities as a painter. Each year it is the same and yet completely fresh.
My practice is grounded in observation of the world. I am inspired by painters like Morandi, Sisley, Sickert, Sargent and more locally Richard Scott.
These artists all use a figurative language to communicate something unseen, subtle and mysterious. They are all masters of restraint and simplicity. Richard Scott, in particular showed me that art, that is on the surface straightforward, restrained and small can still be powerful in its ability to move the viewer.
Developing eloquence in the language of representation is the goal I aspire to and this is what I practice. I am inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s statement:
“As practice makes perfect, I cannot but make progress; each drawing one makes, each study one paints, is a step forward.”
