Still Life with Pepper - Oil on Board 2005
An interesting aspect of getting older as an artist is the nostalgia of looking back at older paintings. This one brings up a lot of memories. I was living in Fore Street, Ipswich in a flat I shared with about 4 other people over the years of 2004 - 2009. This included Simon, Tom, Amber & Marta - one after the other, not at the same time!
During this time I was really unhappy at work, I wanted to be an artist and escape the 9-5. I tried lots of different things, styles, ideas. One thing that had a big impact was this book Drawing, Seeing and Observation by Ian Simpson - I gave me a sense of direction. When I looked back at my old sketchbooks, it was my drawings from life that were both technically better but also emotionally connected me with those moments of looking and seeing.
Around this time I came across daily painting and eventually set up a little shadow box and painted this pepper. I think there must have been a combination of beginners mind and beginners luck as even now, 20 years on I am still pleased with it. I sold it shortly after to my friend Dan.
